À propos

Jan Smith is a contemporary jewellery artist working with vitreous enamel in combination with altered and textured metals; her work employs traditional enamelling in combination with contemporary techniques. Smith’s work is commemorating the transience, unnoticed moments of her natural and domestic world. It reflects an intimate connection to place and a deep sense of knowing that place and has a tactile delicacy that encourages touch and intimates frost, sand and eroded surfaces. The marks create a language or code; this is an invented language, a code that creates a dialogue regarding the natural world. The sensual, tactile qualities of the work remind us of the significance of quotidian occurrences.

Originally from Vancouver BC, Jan Smith received her BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in Halifax, NS, and studied metalsmithing and enamelling in Seattle, WA. Her work has been showcased in exhibitions across Canada, USA and Europe and is featured in several publications.

I see jewellery as a remarkable language: a meaningful code, open for investigations. What triggers me is its capability of identifying and marking a body and as carrier of meanings. Jewellery is both intimate and public, almost performance in nature; its ability to create an evocative reaction and the dialogue created intrigues me.
