About

Mónica Leitão Mota is a Portuguese-born visual artist based in Ontario, Canada.

Originally trained in sculpture, she spent many years teaching art in Portugal before moving to Canada with her family.

Her practice is inherently material-driven: through textiles, free-motion embroidery, printmaking, painting and collage she investigates the liminal spaces that form when techniques and surfaces meet. Mónica is fascinated by disequilibrium, degeneration and the processes of repair — how marks, weathering and distress can generate a new visual logic that then requires reconstruction.

Working often with water-based media and experimental printmaking processes, she draws direct inspiration from her garden — its seasonal colour shifts, decay and regrowth become recurring references in tone, texture and composition. Her recent pieces continue to balance accidental processes with careful reworking.

Mónica’s work has appeared in group exhibitions across Ontario and is featured in TextileArtist.org and Textiel Plus Magazine.
