I investigate materiality in the digital sphere using a flatbed scanner, cloth, and thread. My fascination with the unknown motivates me to experiment with conventional materials and technologies in unconventional ways to consider new ways of forming patterns. I am currently experimenting with changing the rules of embroidery art in order to transform it into animations and video art. During the slow process of hand-stitching with the equally slow process of stop-motion animation, the fibres of the fabric and the cotton embroidery floss deteriorate and leave impressions of memory of previous stitching actions on the fabric. My process-based practice bridges the gap between textile-making techniques and digital technologies by combining the slow, laborious process of hand-stitching with a similarly laborious process of digital art and animation techniques. My unconventional applications of a flatbed scanner, digital softwares, and hand-stitching produce unexpected surface outcomes that investigate chance, spontaneity, and experimentation.
I am a textile artist and educator who investigates spontaneous experimentation in my process-based practice. I graduated from OCAD University’s Material Art & Design program in June 2020 with a BFA, and I am currently pursuing an MFA at Concordia University’s Fibre & Material Practices program. I received the 2019 Award of Excellence in Community Arts Engagement from the Ontario Museum Association for my work at the Textile Museum of Canada. In recognition of my creative practice, I have most recently received the Shanks Memorial Award in Textiles from Craft Ontario and the Creative Promise Award from Surface Design Association in 2020.
