Erin McArthur and Mike Gillan, as Northeastern Folk Art, make their mark on the local ceramics landscape with distinctive raku-fired work. A marriage of the east and west coast, both in the figurative and the literal sense, when Erin and Mike began to make pottery and giftware, they brought together different backgrounds for ideas and designs. Mike, originally a chef by profession, has a lifelong passion for carving and polishing stones. Erin left the corporate world once a long held desire to make a living as an artist became possible.
Their work is carried in gift shops around Newfoundland and Labrador, and beyond, and held in private collections around the world. In addition to raku fired work, there is porcelain. Some is simple everyday ware, and the other, decorative and colourful one-of-a-kind. Inspired by a love of the sea, pleasant summers at the shore with family and friends, and the small joys of everyday life, Erin and Mike divide their time between St. John's and Bell Island with occasional adventures further afield.
