About

I have been a maker of things for as long as I could remember. I spent most of my time in my mother’s fabric shop in the small town called Bouctouche in New Brunswick. I would help her choose fabrics from the traveling salesmen samples, and when I was old enough, I started making clothing for local ladies. I left for college as soon as I could and studied Fashion Design at Sheridan College in Ontario. After college, I moved to Montreal, found a job in the garment industry and quickly found out that much of my understanding of the creative side of Fashion, didn’t exist when working in mass produced clothing.

I started visiting museums and during a visit to the Musée des Maître et Artisans du Québec, I discovered a collection of hand hooked rugs. Intrigued by this historical craft technique, I set out to make one of my own. It was only after seeing Vuillard’s “Window overlooking the Woods” at the Fine Arts Museum of Montreal did I become curious on whether I could create hooked tapestries that looked like paintings.

From those early experiments, I do not separate art and craft. They are the same. When I went to museums and saw painting that told stories of humanity collected through time, I also saw it’s transposition into tapestries, sculptures, pottery and ceramics. What I felt, through craftsmanship, is that we all have a collected memory that inspires stories of who we are and how we live? When we look back, we understand ourselves and how we got to where we are. When I think about who I am and what I do, I see the same. Through craft, I express the memories and emotions that tell my story of who I am at this moment in time.

Through craft, I create art.

Rachelle LeBlanc is a Canadian Textile Artist whose work explores the sifting paradigms of people and place through narrative figures, landscapes and sculpture. Influenced by the radical reshaping of the rural landscape she grew up in, she investigates how our lives are affected by our experiences, surroundings, and the connections we form with other people, friends and family.

Her work has been exhibited internationally in numerous group and solo shows. Recently, Rachelle participated in group and solo shows at Yeiser Art Center in Paducah, Kentucky, The Gallery, University of Connecticut in Stamford, The Harbourfront Center in Toronto, and Art Gallery of Regina, The St Albert Art Gallery, University of Winnipeg Gallery and the Alberta Craft Council.
