Zara was born and raised on the island of Barbados and spent her formative years there, studying and working between Canada and Barbados, respectively. She has a diverse background in fine art, receiving her BA (Hons.) in Fine Art from the University of Guelph and most recently a Certificate in Ceramics from the Haliburton School of Art and Design, Fleming College.

Her work explores the intricate and fragile beauty of coral reef ecosystems and their inhabitants evoking a sense of examination, concern and awareness with the human caused threats they face such as plastic pollution and climate change. Her work strives to visually communicate, stimulate and provoke the conscience of consumers of single-use plastic disposables. Using a variety of found plastic objects as moulds to design and create sculptural and functional works, Zara adds hand-built coral structures and/or organisms which appear to grow on the plastic object, consume the object and in some cases, fuse together into one mass.
