Mónica Leitão Mota is a Portuguese mixed media artist whose work is mainly focused on screen printing and free motion embroidery, applied on paper and fabric.
She has an artistic background in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Porto, Portugal, and was a teacher of Visual Art and Geometry of more than 10 years, before moving to Canada in 2005.
She is a member of the Society for Embroidered Work in the United Kingdom and is also a member of Craft Ontario (Canadian Crafts Federation).
Photography and image manipulation are behind her drive to explore light and shadow contrast, transparencies and colour.
She then uses thread to create graphic and textured details on layers of printed surfaces like different papers, silk organza and recycled and vintage fabric.
Her recent work explores the three-dimensional possibilities, where experimentation with mixed media is her primary interest.
