À propos

Learn to create batik on Japanese paper using soy wax, a non-scented biodegradable wax. Batik is a traditional technique that uses hot wax as a resist to mask out patterns on textile before applying dye. In this contemporary workshop, different methods of applying wax and colour (pigment) and removing the wax will be shown. At the end of the class, students will have created a bundle of their own batik washi to take home and will have learned enough to continue the process at home. The $25 kit includes wax, ink, paint, and Washi paper. If desired, students may also bring small swatches of cotton or silk to experiment on as well.

Loree Ovens works in a variety of media and is best known for her printmaking on paper that is reminiscent of old documents, aged textiles or barkcloth. She specializes with intaglio techniques, especially that of copper etching, aquatint, dry point and collagraph. Primarily working with Japanese Washi and often combining the use of surface design techniques for textiles, her fascination with line, pattern, and architecture continue to inspire her work. Loree has shown her work in national and international exhibitions in Canada, Japan, the United States, Taiwan, Australia and Scotland. Her work is part of both private and public collections including the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, Art Gallery of New South Wales and SGC International.
