Meet your Instructor:

Judy Trefry

I have been involved in crafts from an early age learning knitting, crotchet, counted cross stitch and embroidery from my grandmother. On my visits to Nova Scotia and in a couple of friends’ homes in Manitoba I saw examples of hooked rugs and began to read about this fascinating old skill.

In 2003, while in Nova Scotia, I had a chance to take a two day course in hooking rugs and haven’t stopped since. I enjoy designing my own rugs using my love of nature and anything around me as inspiration. Once you begin designing and dying wool for your rugs you never look at an item the same way again. When you see something the question is always “how could I hook that” and “how do I get that colour with my dyes?” My rug of the grain elevator in Beausejour has been on tour for three years with 40 other rugs depicting elevators in the prairie provinces. A rug I designed of a lighthouse still in use in southern Nova Scotia was on tour in the Atlantic Provinces for a year.

As supplies were unavailable here, I am importing what is needed, dying my own colours and selling supplies to other rug hookers. My husband creates the hooks and hoops in his workshop. I teach courses in rug hooking and dying wool to all who are interested. I also do demonstrations whenever the opportunity arises.
