About

Making art en plein air (onsite, out of doors), has been a technique enjoyed by painters since the nineteenth century. But fibre artists can do it too! And what better location than in the beautiful surrounds of Elora. Karen Miller has completed a number of pieces en plein air and feels that the process not only strengthens our powers of perception but also enriches our overall art practice. It is also a whole lot of fun! In this workshop, you will learn how to really look at the world around you and translate what you see into your own small rug hooking project outdoors. Topics covered will include what supplies you will need and best set-up for success; choosing a composition and simplifying your scene; capturing colour and light; the importance of value in your art and the benefits of plein air work to your art practice. No experience is necessary for this workshop.

Karen Miller has been a hooked fibre artist for over a decade and has been teaching fibre art and rug hooking workshops to adults and children for the past six years. Her award-winning works have been exhibited at a number of venues across Canada and the United States. She has been featured in publications in North America, Europe and Australia. Karen is a frequent contributor to Rug Hooking Magazine where she encourages everyone to pick up a hook, or a pen, or a brush, and let their imagination run. Her first book, "Eyes Open to the World: Memories of Travel in Wool" was published by Ampry Publishing in November 2019.
