About

INTERWEAVING: to put together or combine two or more things so that they cannot be
separated easily.

INTERWOVEN is a multi-sensory exploration of the ways cloth mediates care and time. How is the tactility of cloth interwoven and unseen in our daily lives? What happens when that sensory experience of cloth is altered, replaced with a different sensory experience or even removed?

Forms found in functional cloth in my home are put through a process of translation using haptic processes and materials like clay, photography and printmaking. By shifting familiar forms into a liminal space, memories are lost and found, the present, past and future exist simultaneously and the understood is upturned and re-imagined. The purpose of these explorations is not to master these practices but rather to know the materials more deeply and to consider unlearning and beginners mind as sympathetic thresholds where things believed to be true can become something different. Awkwardness, imperfection and glitch become key ingredients of new embodied languages that resonate within my own practice of weaving which I feel deeply within my own awkward body.

Amanda Wood (Vancouver, BC) is a Canadian artist living and working on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples – Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. Her practice is process and material driven and current work considers time, labour, physical gesture, connectivity, digital space and self-organizing systems.
