About

Learn how to darn anything with help from the Swift Loom. This vintage-inspired tool keeps threads organized and makes it easy to get a tidy, even weave. No sewing experience is necessary: beginner and seasoned sewists alike are welcome to discover the possibilities of this mending technique. Bring a favourite sweater, scarf, tea towel or other hole-y item to mend, or use our supplies to practice on before tackling your own projects. Participants will learn how to use the loom to patch mid- and heavy-weight fabrics as well as add embellishment to a piece in creative ways. The cost of the loom is included in your workshop fee, so you’ll get to take one of these handcrafted gems home to mend to your heart and your wardrobe’s content!

Elysha Schuhbauer is an emerging artist based in Kitchener, Ontario exploring creativity, functionality and environmental responsibility. She squeezes sturdy, stylish accessories from discarded textiles, and has a soft spot for anything nicely repaired. Not surprisingly, Elysha is especially inspired by repurposed materials, especially those close to the earth like natural fibres, wood, and metal. Garbage night is a risky one for a stroll: she finds much joy in contemplating discarded items and finding creative ways to divert resources from landfill. Recently, she has been working hard to develop and handcraft the Swift Darning Loom from such repurposed materials, which will be available at the Black Sheep Festival as well as online.
