Eileen is a native Newfoundlander who lives and paints in New Perlican on the beautiful Baccalieu trail. Having grown up in historic Heart's Content, she was enamoured with the many Victorian houses, huge churches, wharves, stages, boats and harbour. Being the daughter of a fisherman and boat builder whose ancestry went back generations in the fishing industry, she was steeped in outport history and folklore. Upon retiring from banking, most of which was in St. John's, she retired along with her husband to New Perlican and found the desire to paint houses, row houses, stages, outport scenes, mummers and anything folklore related. New Perlican has a sheltered harbour with 17 colorful stages (currently), Matthews began painting their likeness on small rocks which became fridge magnets, then progressed to painting on glass, then slate, wood, and now canvas. Self taught, she always enjoyed arts and crafts, doing various courses and constantly learning but with her banking career she did not have time to pursue art. Inspired by the colorful surroundings in the province, her canvases tend to be outport scenes, always with the sea in them. Her artwork is sold in many of the Arts/Crafts stores along the Baccalieu Trail and in St. John's at the Craft Council gallery or from her business Face book page NERRL Hand Painted Designs.
